Hyperopia, also known as hypermetropia or long-sightedness, is a common vision condition where distant objects are seen more clearly than nearby ones. This occurs when the eye is either shorter than average or the cornea (the clear front cover of the eye) is too flat. As a result, light entering the eye focuses behind the retina, instead of directly on it.
This misalignment causes nearby objects—like a book or smartphone screen—to appear blurry. In contrast, distant objects often remain relatively clear. Hyperopia can lead to symptoms like eye strain, headaches, and fatigue, especially during tasks that require near vision, such as reading or using a computer.
In Hypermetropia (long sightedness), the eye is shorter than normal or the cornea is too flat, so that light rays focus behind the retina. Light rays from close objects such as pages of a book cannot be focused on clearly by the retina. Someone with hypermetropic eyes may find their vision is blurred when looking at objects near to them, and for vision to be clearer when looking at far away objects. Placing a plus-powered (convex) lens in front of a hypermetropic eye allows the image to be moved forward, allowing for correct focus on the retina.
A degree of long-sightedness is common in many people, although this only presents a problem when our ability to see is significantly affected or where headaches and eye strain are common.
A routine eye test at InFocus Opticians can easily detect hyperopia. Our qualified optometrists will assess your vision and eye health using advanced diagnostic tools. Regular eye exams are essential—especially for children and people over 40—as hyperopia can change over time.
Hyperopia is typically a result of:
It can be present from birth and may decrease or become more noticeable as a person ages.
Children with hyperopia may not initially show symptoms, as their eyes are more adaptable. However, uncorrected hyperopia in children can lead to issues like:
At InFocus Opticians in London, we specialise in hyperopia glasses for children, offering stylish, comfortable frames and lenses specifically designed to support their eye health and development.
Treatment depends on the degree of long-sightedness and the presence of symptoms. The most common treatments include:
1. Prescription Glasses for Hyperopia
Plus-powered lenses correct the focus by bringing the image forward onto the retina.
We offer a wide range of hyperopia glasses in London for both adults and children, including designer and budget-friendly frames.
2. Contact Lenses
3. Refractive Surgery
4. Customised Hyperopia Lenses
Hyperopia (long-sightedness) causes blurry near vision, while myopia (short-sightedness) affects distance vision. They are opposite refractive errors.
Hyperopia is often present from birth and may reduce with age, but it can also become more noticeable after the age of 40.
Mild hyperopia can improve as a child’s eye grows. However, moderate to severe cases may require glasses to avoid developmental issues.
Yes. Hyperopia glasses are prescription-based and designed for long-term correction, while reading glasses are typically over-the-counter and for near vision only.
We recommend a comprehensive eye exam every 1–2 years, or as advised by your optometrist—especially if you experience headaches or vision changes.
Even mild hyperopia can cause eye strain or headaches, especially during prolonged near tasks. Glasses can provide relief and improved comfort.

Amazing, lightening quick appointment was had, optician listened to all my concerns and advised accordingly, chose the frames I wanted which were ready equally as speedily. Two of my previous frames which had lost screws on the arms were also repaired complimentarily and look almost new! Thank you to all the team especially Huda and Nadeem, and of course Imranali running everything in the background!Posted on Google![]()

Brought my Cartier frames in for servicing and was met with nothing but professionalism from Nadeem and his staff. While other shops quoted me a six-month wait for parts and service, Nadeem had everything completed in just two weeks—and for an extremely reasonable price. If you want an optician who truly goes the extra mile, this is the place to go.Posted on Google![]()

I had an incredible experience at InFocus Opticians. The level of bespoke service and care they offer is honestly rare to find. From the moment I walked in, the team took their time to understand what I needed, what suited my face, and what matched my style. It never felt rushed or transactional; it felt curated. Their collection is unlike anywhere else I’ve been. They carry stunning handcrafted Japanese frames and a range of unique artisanal pieces that you simply don’t find in mainstream opticians. Every pair came with a story, a craft, a level of detail that made the whole process feel personal. After trying several options and getting thoughtful guidance throughout, I ended up buying two pieces, both of which feel like they were made exactly for me. The precision of the fitting, the honest advice, and the genuine passion for eyewear made the decision easy. If you’re looking for eyewear that’s truly tailored to you, supported by people who care deeply about their craft, I couldn’t recommend InFocus more highly. They also were able to find me a bespoke accessory for my previous glasses which other opticians could not source.Posted on Google![]()

The Infocus Opticians team is exceptional and I cannot praise their professionalism enough. Their attention to detail, knowledge, and outstanding customer service make them a standout in a market saturated with opticians. I had an eye exam and needed two pairs of lenses for my glasses. Nadeem meticulously took all the measurements, checked my posture for various use cases, and ensured a speedy delivery of my varifocal lenses. I am very happy with my new glasses. Thank you.
